Campervans Fontainebleau

No sleeping in the forest parking lots

In the parking lots in the Forest of Fontainebleau, parking is no longer allowed between 22:00 and 6:00. This total parking ban during the nighttime (also for locals who want to walk their dog) was established after the Easter weekend of 2023, during which so many climbers with a campervan were staying in the parking lot of Isatis that it resembled a crowded campground. Emergency roads were blocked, and there were even tents set up next to some campervans.

Best places to park and sleep; Campings and camping-car area's

The best and most sustainable place to spend the night with your camper is at one of the many campsites around Fontainebleau. There is also a special camper parking area: Aire de Camping-car Communale de Milly-la-Forêt. Additionally, in France, it is allowed to sleep in your car or (camper)van on public parking lots. You can do this in or around the villages. As a camper owner, you will be familiar with apps where the best spots are shared.

Key rules on public parkings: No camping behaviour

As mentioned above, in France, it is allowed to spend the night in a campervan on public parking spaces, provided that you follow certain rules:

  • No camping behavior: It is not allowed to place items such as chairs, tables, awnings, or other camping equipment outside the camper. This is considered "camping" and is prohibited in public parking areas. The fine for (wild)camping in the Fontainebleau forest is 1500 euro's.
  • Local regulations: Municipalities may enforce specific rules that limit or prohibit overnight stays in campers. Always check for restrictions.
  • Safety and nuisance: Make sure your camper does not block traffic signs, driveways, or other important sightlines. Park in a way that does not cause inconvenience to other road users or residents.
  • Duration of stay: You may stay in the same spot for a maximum of seven days.

Don't misuse bivouac parkings

Although the forest parkings are now closed at night, parking a campervan seems to be tolerated (for now) at the parking lots designated for the three bivouacs in the forest. These bivouacs are primarily meant for hikers planning to pitch their tent for a single night.

However, this leniency could swiftly end if climbers with campervans overwhelmingly occupy these bivouac parking spaces. Those planning to stay in Fontainebleau for multiple days (2+) or during peak time holidays and weekends (e.g. Ascension day, Easter), should avoid parking at these bivouac parkings and visit a campsite.
Moreover, maintaining cleanliness around the parking areas is crucial. Ensure no litter or toilet paper is left behind. It's recommended to have a toilet(box) in your campervan or utilize public restrooms to uphold environmental respect and cleanliness. It is also important to show no camping behaviour as mentioned in the key rules above.
